Biography Cameron:
Cameron Tonkinwise is the Director of Design Studies at the School of Design at Carnegie Mellon University. He also directs the School of Design’s Doctoral research program which aims to bring practice-based design research to task of transitioning our societies toward more sustainable futures. Cameron has a background in philosophy and continues to research what designers can learn from philosophies of making, material culture studies and sociologies of technology. Much of his research focuses on the design of systems that lower societal materials intensity, primarily by decoupling use and ownership – in other words, systems of shared use.


Biography Terry:
Terry Irwin is the Head of the School of Design at Carnegie Mellon University and has been teaching at the University level since 1986. She has been an adjunct professor at Otis Parsons, Los Angeles, California College of the Arts (1989-2003), San Francisco and The University of Dundee, Scotland. She has also guest taught and lectured widely in North America and Europe.

Terry was a founding partner of the San Francisco office of the international design firm, MetaDesign where she served as Creative Director from 1992 – 2001 and worked for clients such as Nissan, Apple Computer, Nike, Barclay’s Bank, Ernst & Young, The Berlin Transport Authority and Sony, among others. In 2003 Terry moved to Devon, England to complete an MSc in Holistic Science at Schumacher College, an international center for ecological studies and joined the faculty there in 2004. In 2007 she moved to Scotland to undertake PhD research at the Centre for the Study of Natural Design at the University of Dundee, Scotland.

Since her arrival at CMU in 2009, she has led the design and launch of new programs and curricula at the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels. Terry’s research is in the area of Transition Design (design-led transition toward more sustainable futures) and explores how living systems principles can inform a more appropriate and responsible way to design. Terry holds an MFA in Design from the Allgemeine Kunstgewerbeschule in Basel, Switzerland.


“Design for/in Transition”
The School of Design at Carnegie Mellon University recently reframed its teaching and research in terms of the idea of Transition Design. This talk will explain Transition Design as a response to the complexities and opportunities that are arising as a result of the mainstreaming of Service Design. From a wider perspective, Service Design projects are integral to radical changes in the nature of work – e.g., the freelancing associated with Sharing Economy Platforms. The best Service Design projects today result in relational encounters between service providers and recipients that amount to rich, on-going learning experiences (LX). Given these social changes, all designers, but especially service designers, need to learn to understand their practice as enabling multi-level, multi-stage transitions
