TRANSCRIPT:
Rhythm is the repetition of elements to create a visual beat or tempo in a work of art and is closely related to the principles of pattern and movement.
Think of rhythm in terms of music, maybe the rise of a music scale, like the lines of this fence rising, do re mi. Or the beat of a drum Creating a tempo, boom boom boom boom boom.
Rhythm can also help establish an energy, mood, or physical sensation through an image.
Regular rhythm occurs when similar objects are evenly spaced out or are being predictably repeated. Though the weave of this placemat is cut off by the edges of the picture plane, you can probably guess what the rest of the object looks like.
Irregular rhythm shows repeated elements but not with exact precision. These waves are repeated across the image but are unevenly spaced and vary in size making it difficult to predict what the next one will look like.
In Progressive rhythm, the elements change proportion or size as they move across space, as though they are demonstrating a progression of steps. As these columns recede back into space, they appear to get gradually closer together and smaller in size.
Staccato rhythms are abrupt repetitions that change frequently with no set pattern. The various sizes, shapes, and placement of the glass shards in this photo act like a visual burst of sound.
So whether you're using regular, irregular, progressive, or staccato, rhythm can add a level of musicality to your work.
