The story of the 1876 election, and the 1877 commission to determine the winner is shrouded in misstatements and faulty interpretations. Most are built on the myth of a secret deal to sell out the south by the Republicans in order to gain the presidency. This is perpetuated by scholars who never go back to question that comfortable narrative, and it is generally taught in college and most US history textbooks contain that myth.
After a question from a student, I decided to look into the facts, read the diaries of people involved, the partisan press from the November election through the 4 March inauguration, and studied the relevant laws. That narrative does not hold. There was no secret deal. A Republican was going to be president on 4 March. As for the Federal troops being withdrawn--they were already gone, fighting on the western plains. To claim the small number left constituted an occupation would only make sense to someone who has never actually occupied a region, as I did in Afghanistan.
