An Indian source stated that Iran would allow India-flagged tankers to pass through the strait, a key route for India’s energy imports ie crude oil and natural gas. This reportedly followed diplomatic engagements, including talks between India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, with some Indian media outlets claiming safe passage for specific vessels like the tankers Pushpak and Parimal, and one crude tanker reaching Mumbai. However, an Iranian source explicitly denied any such permission or exemption for Indian-flagged tankers. This denial aligns with Iran’s broader stance in the conflict, where it has restricted or threatened vessels linked to the U.S., Israel, Europe, and their allies, while effectively halting much of the commercial traffic through the strait (tanker transits have dropped dramatically, with attacks, mines, and warnings reported).
