EDENDERRY VILLAGE

Описание: Situated on the bank of the Lagan, on the edge of the Minnowburn property is Edenderry, a village born of Belfast’s famous linen industry using the water power of the nearby river Lagan. Let's go for a wee look see.
The name Edenderry comes from the Gaelic Eadan Doire, which means ‘front of the oak grove’, a reference to the oaks which once covered the surrounding land.
History. Originally the area was the estate of Edenderry House, the residence of the Russell family and as early as 1780 John Russell had established a bleachgreen, for the bleaching of linen. However around 1830, the Russells gave up linen bleaching and converted their premises into a flour mill powered by water.
In the 1860s, John Shaw Brown and William Liddell had been established in the linen industry in Donaghcloney and in 1866, with their partnership dissolved, John Shaw Brown purchased the mill and bleachyard at Edenderry, converting it into a weaving factory, called ‘St. Ellen works’ in honour of his wife, Ellen.
John. S. Brown & Sons went on to be a successful linen empire and the village of Edenderry grew up around the factory, with around 90 terraced houses built. These solid red bricked houses form the nucleus of the village today. Records also show that a power plant in the factory produced coal gas for the houses and workers could use a number of baths in the factory and the village shop. Maps of the time also show allotments and a ‘club’ in the village, where John Shaw Brown would hold weekly dances for the workers.

Today the village boasts a very active community association, brand new playpark, floral displays galore, wide open field and parkland areas and wonderful colourful allotments. All it needs now is a wee craft/coffee shop!
