Why do Japanese people call the front of the car the bonnet and the back of the car the trunk? Isn't this against any extant variety of English?
Well, no, you see, because it perfectly matches Japanese English. Language ownership is a myth created by humans to feel as though they were born into a language, and therefore superior at its use than others. But in reality, all language users are merely language users. Children may be native to a place, but they are not native to a language. A child born in China will always have been born in China. A child born in China and then stolen away by aliens will not speak Chinese.
The question is therefore not one of native/non-native, but of time and comfort. And because languages exist only in the minds of users as a vague construct, held together by tentative silent agreements which can at any time be re-negotiated or broken, the foolish native conceit that they know the rules - or are the arbiters of the rules - is no more valid than the statement of a snot-nosed brat on the playground declaring themselves king. The illusion may be maintained, as all the other children praise their new ruler and obey them, but the bell will eventually ring, the so-called "lord" will overextend their hand only to see those who buy into the illusion leave, or everyone will simply move on to another game.
As a result, what we must ask is not why do Japanese people call the front of the car the bonnet and the back of the car the trunk, but rather why WE do not? Is not the back where the trunk once was, and now where trunks go? Certainly there are more trunks in trunks than boots! And would not a car look cute with a bonnet? If we value adorability in our language, certainly the British win that round. And if we, as we are wont to do, humanize our vehicles by referring to them by pronouns like "she", wouldn't they wink rather than blink? Do you not see, snot-nosed child who believed themselves to be king, that the kingdom you have imagined for yourself could potentially be better? That there are limits to your imagination that you did not even realize until you saw someone else's interpretation of the world you imagined this world to be? Is it so hard to admit that image painted by your neighbor is better than your own, even if they did once learn from you?
