Feeling a bit anxious with a few hours to burn, I hastily packed my kit and drove north to check ice conditions. Looking at my pile of gear tossed in the truck, it was obvious I didn’t have high hopes. Temps at the house were very mild and dusting of snow in the backyard was beginning to melt.
Upon arriving in the Notch, however, I could see just enough ice to motivate a walk uphill. What I found was pretty typical “early season ice” conditions: very thin start into mostly unbonded at the finish.
As my grandfather would say: “Looked good from far, but it was far from good.” 😂
When the days start getting shorter and the temps drop, I get daily inquiries about ice conditions. That usualy transitions into the conversation, what’s considered “IN” or “OUT”?
We each have differing acceptable levels of risk. I notice level of risk acceptance is often linked to skillset and experience.
One climbers “IN” may be another climbers “OUT”.
While I had a great time climbing this line, it’s not “IN”. It was more like something to do. It’s fun to explore early season. To read ice and make decisions in the moment. I really enjoy watching ice climbs change week to week and throughout the season. I could go pretty deep here as the coffee is kicking in, but I’ll leave it here.
