Описание: The political temperature in West Bengal is rising as assembly elections approach. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has launched a major protest in Kolkata against alleged mass deletions in electoral rolls following the Special Intensive Revision by the Election Commission of India.

The sit-in is taking place at Metro Channel, a location historically linked to Mamata Banerjee’s street politics and major political movements. The protest comes just 48 hours before a full bench of the Election Commission is scheduled to arrive in Kolkata to review poll preparedness in the state.

The ruling All India Trinamool Congress has alleged that thousands of voters have been removed from the rolls, particularly in constituencies dominated by the Matua community. The party claims the revision process could potentially disenfranchise large sections of voters ahead of the elections.

Banerjee has also accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of politicising the citizenship issue and targeting Matua voters through the revision exercise.

For Mamata, returning to the streets revives the style of politics that defined her rise, recalling movements like the Singur agitation and her dramatic 2021 election campaign when she continued campaigning despite an injured leg.

With protests escalating, voter roll revisions have now become a major political flashpoint in West Bengal ahead of the assembly elections.
