Today, in our sports encyclopedia series we will talk about carom billiards.
Carom Billiards is a type of cue sport that was invented in France in the 18th century.
The objective of the sport is to carom a player's own cue ball off of the opponent’s cue ball and the object ball in a single shot.
Carom Billiards is played between two players with three balls includes two cue balls, one for each player and an object ball on a table without any pockets.
Out of the two cue balls, one is solid white, and the other cue ball is solid white with a black dot.
In certain matches, a solid yellow ball has also been used as the second cue ball.
The third ball is the object ball which is always solid red in color.
Although there’s always one object ball in a different variant of carom billiards, a second object ball is used.
The game begins and players are awarded points when their cue ball strikes the opponent’s cue ball and the red object ball in a specific order, in a single shot.
The player’s turn ends if they are not able to successfully strike both balls in a single shot.
A match of carom billiards is played for a fixed number of points.
Shooting the wrong cue ball incurs a penalty of one point and loss of turn.
The first player who manages to reach the fixed number of points is declared as the winner.
