A woman lies on a bed, as if something had stolen her soul. Sitting on her chest is a dark creature, staring at her with a chilling gaze… and from behind the curtain, a horse’s head appears with wide, haunting eyes. This is "The Nightmare", a painting by Henry Fuseli that has sent shivers down people’s spines ever since it was first shown in 1782.
In this video, I’ll tell you the story behind this disturbing image, its connection to sleep paralysis, and why so many people saw their own fears reflected in it. You’ll also learn how the public reacted to the painting back then—and how it became an icon of gothic horror.
