The consumption of diet drinks and sugar free artificial sweeteners is huge. More people than ever are using artificial sweetened drinks and sugar substitutes instead of real sugar and sugar sweetened sodas and drinks. Most people are choosing artificial sweeteners over sugar thinking that it’s a healthier alternative, but is it really?
According to recent research, consuming diet drinks like diet soda, sugar free energy drinks, and artificial sweeteners is actually linked to “Weight Gain”, rather than weight loss, which is why most people drink them in the first place.
Now it may seem a bit puzzling at first, how could a zero calorie diet drink cause weight gain? But the reason for this isn’t because of the calories in the drinks themselves. But rather how the body reacts when it thinks it’s going to consume sugar and then doesn’t actually get any sugar.
This can mess with your natural metabolic processes in the body and often leads to an increased appetite due to the hormonal response created from consuming the artificial sweeteners.
So even though you maybe saving calories in the short term by consuming a sugar free diet drink, you’re much more likely to eat excess calories afterwards to satisfy your body’s needs and cravings for sugar.
Now I know after hearing this, some people are going to wonder what should they be drinking if diet drinks are not ideal. Should they go back to consuming regular sugary drinks instead?
No, consuming excess sugar is still bad for the body and linked to numerous health problems including weight gain and diabetes. The best option if you are seriously interested in improving your health and losing weight naturally is to consume natural zero calorie drinks like pure water, black coffee, black tea, etc. and get your calories from natural unprocessed foods instead.
When it comes to nutrition and your body, you can’t fool mother nature. The best option is usually the simplest one.
