This video describes how to perform direct ophthalmoscopy using the Arclight low-cost ophthalmoscope. Direct ophthalmoscopy allows identification of all the major blinding diseases. This includes cataract, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. Direct ophthalmoscopy examination of the optic nerve for signs of papilloedema can also help detect raised intra-cranial pressure and brain tumours.
A simple, quick and effective systematic approach to the direct ophthalmoscopy examination is illustrated in the video including:
General inspection of the eye
Set up of the Arclight ophthalmoscope
Red reflex test
Fundoscopy of the optic nerve and retinal vessels
