At first glance, an alcohol-activated palette looks like a dried out, defective version of a cream (or creme) palette. DON'T FREAK OUT!
Alcohol-activated palettes contain pure pigments without any filler. You need to ACTIVATE the pigment with 99% alcohol, similar to the technique used in water painting. While it may not look like there's a lot of product in that palette, professional makeup artists often find that these palettes will last them YEARS! After you apply alcohol-activated makeup, the alcohol evaporates and leaves behind just the color pigment. The resulting makeup is waterproof and you don't need to set it with a powder.
Cream palettes, on the other hand, contain pigment mixed with fillers. Beginners often find it easier to work with cream makeups because you simply dip your brush or sponge into the makeup and start applying. It is also easier to correct any mistakes when you are working with creme makeup. Because the pigment is mixed with filler, however, you might need more product than an alcohol-activated makeup to create your desired effect. Additionally, you should apply a setting powder and also ideally a setting spray to your cream makeup, to minimize smudging or rubbing off.
Alcohol-based makeup requires a special remover, like Telesis Super Solv. Cream makeup can usually be washed off with just soap and water.
Despite the higher initial price point, alcohol-based makeup palettes are often a much better value than a cream palette.
