Samatya is an ancient Istanbul neighborhood that's been home to Turkey's Armenian minority for centuries. But what's Armenian culture like there today?
Turkish taverns (meyhanes), once primarily owned by Armenians, flourished in 19th century Samatya. Here, I'll take you to a very local meyhane and dive into a conversation about the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over an array of mouth-watering mezes. So, pour yourself a glass of raki (or tea) and come along for the adventure.
Places visited in this video:
Seyran Pastanesi
Ahmet Baba'nin Yeri
Tarihi Emirgan Kahvesi
Getting there:
From Eminonu bus station, hop on bus number 35 towards the last stop Kocamustafapasa (also known as Samatya). Fun fact: The area was known as Psamathion, meaning "sandy" in Greek because people swam to its sandy shores. A highway was built in the 1980s, cutting the neighborhood off from the Marmara Sea.

What's The Last Stop all about?
What makes a city tick? What makes up the cultural fabric of a particular place? To find out, I head to the last stop of transportation lines in cities around the world. I believe in seeking adventures off the beaten path and out of my comfort zone. But mainly, I let my curiosity and sense of adventure lead the way.
