Diagnosing and treating sudden vision loss is bread and butter in the world of neuro-ophthalmology.
Sudden vision loss may develop from multiple causes including:
optic nerve stroke aka ischemic optic neuropathy (ION, NAION, AION, PION)
brain stroke (cerebrovascular ischemia affecting the retrogeniculate pathways)
optic neuritis (multiple sclerosis, Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorder (NMOSD), Myelin Oligodendrocyte Glycoprotein Associated Disease (MOGAD)
papilledema (IIH, intracranial mass, meningitis, inflammation)
For some of these conditions, such as optic neuritis and papilledema, treatment is available and effective, as long as therapy is initiated early.
For other conditions such as optic nerve or brain stroke, treatment is not always effective because by the time the diagnosis is made, the damage has already been done.
The key is prevention via management of risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol, and sleep apnea.
