Tips:
Drive thru the front heel.

In this video, Matt Hartsky demonstrates the Back Foot Elevated Split Squat, a staple single-leg lower-body exercise used throughout Backbone Unlimited training programs. This movement places a greater demand on the front leg while challenging balance, hip stability, and strength through a longer range of motion—closely matching the demands of climbing, side-hilling, and moving under load in steep, mountainous terrain. If you hunt, hike, or train for real-world performance, this is a foundational exercise you need in your program.

By elevating the back foot, the Back Foot Elevated Split Squat increases load on the lead leg and hips without requiring heavy weights. It exposes left-to-right strength imbalances, reinforces knee and hip control, and builds the kind of unilateral strength that matters when one leg is always doing more work on uneven ground. This makes it especially valuable for backcountry hunters carrying packs, gaining elevation, or training efficiently with minimal equipment.

In this demonstration, Matt shows stance length, torso position, and depth so you can feel the movement where it’s intended and avoid common mistakes. You’ll see how small adjustments change the stimulus, and why controlled reps and solid positioning matter more than speed or fatigue. This exercise can be performed bodyweight only, making it ideal for at-home training, travel, or early-phase strength development.
