Transverse Section of Penis | Cross-Sectional Anatomy Made Easy | NEET PG | USMLE | FMGE | MBBS
The transverse section of the penis reveals the detailed cross-sectional anatomy of its three erectile tissues, their connective coverings, and associated neurovascular structures — all packed within precise fascial compartments that ensure both functional rigidity and protective efficiency during erection and urination 💥.
• At the center and ventral side, you find the corpus spongiosum 🟠 — a single, circular erectile tissue that contains the spongy (penile) urethra, which conducts urine and semen. It is surrounded by a thin layer of tunica albuginea, which is less dense than that of the corpora cavernosa, allowing for expansion without urethral compression.
• Dorsally placed, you'll see two corpora cavernosa 🔵🔵 — paired, oval erectile structures responsible for penile rigidity during erection. These are separated by a septum and are each surrounded by a thick, fibrous tunica albuginea, which plays a critical role in trapping blood during erection.
• Encasing all three erectile bodies is the deep fascia of the penis (Buck’s fascia) — a strong fascial sheath that binds the erectile tissues together and limits excessive distension. Superficial to Buck’s fascia is the superficial fascia (Dartos fascia) and finally the skin.
• Between the dorsal corpora cavernosa, you’ll find the deep dorsal vein, dorsal arteries, and dorsal nerves — vital neurovascular elements supplying the glans, shaft, and skin of the penis 🧠.
This cross-sectional view is crucial in understanding clinical scenarios like urethral injury, priapism, penile trauma, and vascular surgeries, and it also guides ultrasound imaging and catheter placement. Knowing the layered arrangement ensures precise diagnosis and safe procedural interventions 🔍💯.
