It is a very unique honor for the family of a fallen soldier.
Mt. Juliet's Michael Stansbery was killed in Afghanistan in 2010, and Friday his grave was visited by royalty. The soldier's grave is at Arlington National Cemetery. It's where Britain's Prince Harry visited on Friday.
Prince Harry had to be amazed by the 400,000 graves at Arlington, but only one could receive such a special honor.
I'm amazed. I can't believe it, says Michael Stansbery Sr.
By random coincidence, the prince laid a wreath at the grave of Specialist Michael Stansbery. He joined the army straight out of high school, says Stansbery Sr.
Stansbery's parents still grieve the 21 year old who died in 2010 after stepping on an IED in Afghanistan. His father says Michael wanted to be a soldier since he was eight years old.
We supported him 100%, whatever he wanted to do, and he got to do exactly what he wanted to do, says Stansbery Sr.
There's an etching of Michael's headstone here. Another picture shows Michael Sr. mourning his son. Now, Prince Harry is paying respects.
You know I really think that Michael is saying look they haven't forgotten me, now I'm going worldwide, says Tammy Stansbery.
Tammy Stansbery could hardly believe the news. The prince even left a handwritten note honoring the sacrifice of fallen warriors.
Now he has royalty visiting him, and I worried no one would be visiting him, says Tammy Stansbery.
Michael parent's say their son would have loved this. He appreciated recognition and was proud to serve.
Our pastor made a good comment one time. He said he seems like a kid that wanted to be known, and that's exactly true, say Stansbery Sr.
The Stansbery's have always tried to keep their son's memory alive. Now, for this moment at least, he's being remembered on the world stage.
It has truly been another blessing on our journey of grief, says Tammy Stansbery.
Michael Stansbery earned the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart and served in both Iraq and Afghanistan. His parents say almost three years after his death, it's still very painful to know he's gone.
