Periodic properties are predictable patterns in the characteristics of elements that occur as you move across the periodic table. These patterns exist because the elements are arranged by their number of protons and the way their electrons are organized in shells.
The main cause of these trends is the balance between the positive pull from the nucleus (protons) and the distance/shielding provided by the electron shells.
Key properties follow simple rules:
Atomic Radius (Size): Atoms get smaller from left to right across a row (period) because the nucleus pulls electrons tighter. They get larger down a column (group) because you add a new electron shell.
Ionization Energy & Electronegativity: These measure how much an atom wants to hold onto or attract electrons. They both generally increase from left to right (due to stronger nuclear pull) and decrease from top to bottom (because the outer electrons are farther away and shielded).
Essentially, elements on the top right (like Fluorine) are small and highly attractive to electrons, while those on the bottom left (like Cesium) are large and easily give electrons away. These trends allow chemists to accurately predict how any element will behave.
