Cold temperatures, relentless rain, a steel ramp offering zero traction and a heavily laden motorbike sounds like a recipe for disaster.
This weeks video shows one of the most nerve wracking moments experienced during our visit to the South Island last November which was boarding a Bluebridge ferry in Wellington in very wet and windy conditions from dockside on Waterloo Quay.
Our unease intensified as we watched a truck and trailer shunting vehicle attempt and fail, multiple times, to climb up a wet and slippery steel ramp onto the ferry moments before we were all waved through to ride up the very same ramp. The only thing to do was start rolling, go easy on the throttle and easy on the clutch and trust to the torque to pull our heavily laden motorbikes safely up the ramp.
Despite the conditions all motorbikes made it up the ramp and into the parking hold without incident which was a great relief to us all. It was certainly a memorable way to start our amazing South Island adventure !
Ride safe, have fun.
