(10 May 2019) US President Donald Trump says the United States and China "held candid and constructive conversations" on trade after negotiators completed two days of talks on Friday without reaching a deal.
Trump tweeted that "the relationship between President Xi and myself remains a very strong one, and conversations into the future will continue".
The president said that in the meantime, the United States had imposed tariffs on China, "which may or may not be removed depending on what happens with respect to future negotiations!"
US import taxes on US$200 billion of Chinese goods jumped to 25 per cent on Friday, from 10 per cent, as Trump followed through on his threat to hike duties after he accused Chinese negotiators of backtracking on previous concessions they had made in ongoing trade talks.
China has threatened to retaliate.
As trade tensions increase, port authorities across the US are keenly eyeing the ongoing developments.
The Port of Oakland, one of the nation's busiest, handles 2.5 million cargo containers each year, and China is its largest export market.
Port spokesman Mike Zampa says the agency is concerned about how its import and export customers will absorb the cost of the increased tariffs, which will likely be passed onto American consumers.
