India went from importing 78% of the mobile phones it consumed in 2014 to manufacturing 99.6% today.
At Singularity Summit 2026, Mr. S Krishnan, Secretary, MeitY, India and Mr. Yash Kela, Founder & CIO, Singularity AMC discussed what India needs to do next.
Key takeaways:
Mobile phones now account for roughly 45% of India’s electronics output and have become the country’s largest single export item.
PLI helped build manufacturing at scale, including factories who employed 50,000 to 60,000 people at a single location.
Electronics value addition is currently around 18-20%, with ECMS aiming to take this towards 35-40%.
Alongside manufacturing, improving cost competitiveness will be important for India to scale exports. India’s cost disadvantage has reduced from roughly 30% to around 12-12.5%, however interest costs, financing tenure and logistics still remain as constraints.
