The Astra Beyond Visual Range Air-to-Air Missile has undergone significant advancements with its indigenous Radio Frequency (RF) seeker, marking a leap in India’s defense capabilities. Successfully tested on July 11, 2025, from a Su-30 Mk-I fighter jet off Odisha’s coast, the missile demonstrated pinpoint accuracy, destroying high-speed unmanned aerial targets under varied engagement conditions. The RF seeker, a critical component for autonomous target acquisition and tracking, operates in the Ku-band, weighs 12.5 kg, and features a gimbal angle of ±55 degrees, enabling precise detection and fire-and-forget functionality. With a range exceeding 100 km, the Astra integrates advanced guidance, navigation, and electronic counter-countermeasures, ensuring reliable performance in complex combat scenarios. Over 50 public and private industries, including Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, contributed to this milestone, aligning with India’s self-reliance goals in defense technology. The successful validation of the indigenous RF seeker enhances the missile’s lethality and reduces dependence on foreign systems. Advanced variants like Astra Mk-2 and Mk-3 (Gandiva), with extended ranges of 160–340 km, are under development, incorporating dual-pulse motors and solid fuel ducted ramjet propulsion for superior maneuverability and strategic target engagement.
