Get ready to watch my pack absolutely destroy a giant pumpkin! But beyond the fun, you'll also discover why this vibrant squash is an incredible superfood for your furry friends.
*Why Pumpkin is Great for Dogs:*
*Nutrient-Rich:*
Pumpkin is packed with important vitamins and minerals, including:
Vitamins A, E, and C
Potassium
Iron
*Digestive Aid:*
It's a fiber-rich food that can help ease digestion in several ways:
*Adds Bulk to Stool:*
The soluble fiber absorbs water, adding bulk to your dog’s stool.
*Promotes Healthy Gut Bacteria:*
Fiber fermentation produces beneficial fatty acids that provide energy to cells, stimulate intestinal sodium and water absorption, and lower the pH level of the large intestines.
*Acts as a Prebiotic:*
Prebiotics stimulate the growth of beneficial bacteria in the intestines and inhibit harmful bacteria by lowering pH and providing necessary nutrients.
*Helps with Diarrhea:*
These traits can all help with some cases of dog diarrhea. Veterinarians often recommend a diet full of prebiotics (fiber) or adding probiotics, and pumpkin acts as a great prebiotic booster.
*Helps with Constipation:*
On the opposite end of the spectrum, pumpkin can also help ease mild constipation. The Merck Veterinary Manual suggests adding 1-to-4 tablespoons per meal.
*Important:*
Ensure your dog is well-hydrated when increasing fiber, as dehydration can worsen constipation. Consult your vet to rule out serious causes of constipation.
*How to Feed Pumpkin to Your Dog:*
*Plain is Best:*
*Plain, canned pumpkin is the healthiest choice.*
Both fresh and canned pumpkin are good sources of nutrients and fiber, but canned pumpkin often has a higher concentration of fiber due to lower water content.
*Avoid Additives:*
*NEVER use canned pumpkin with added salt, spices, sugar, or other additives.*
These can irritate your dog’s stomach and counteract the beneficial effects.
*CRITICAL WARNING: Xylitol is Extremely Toxic!*
Make sure your canned pumpkin (or any product) *DOES NOT contain artificial sweetener xylitol* as it is extremely toxic to dogs.
*Recommended Quantity:*
To help with diarrhea or mild constipation, add *1 to 4 tablespoons of pumpkin* to your dog’s meal.
*Start Small:*
It's a good idea to begin with smaller quantities to avoid adding too much fiber to their diet.
*Consult Your Vet:*
If you have questions about the exact amount of pumpkin to feed your dog, or if pumpkin doesn't resolve their issues, always consult your veterinarian.

"I'm just some guy on YouTube." I am not a "professional" dog trainer nor K9 nutritionist and I am not representing myself as one on this channel in my videos. I am here just showing what 'I do' and what 'works for me' as a long-time Animal Warden, breeder, and dog rescuer, and I explain why I do it this way. :-)
