Drew Reed would lie awake at night with unbearable pain talking to God. The pain, known as "phantom" pain, was incredibly intense after undergoing bilateral leg amputation. He was barely a teenager.
Reed, a student at Ravenwood High School in Brentwood, Tennessee, had deformity in both legs growing up. His parents took him to the top children's hospitals in the country, but no one seemed to have an answer. That's when they met Aaron Fitzsimmons, a prosthetist and co-founder of Amputee Blade Runners. ABR is a nonprofit based in Nashville. Its mission is to provide free, custom running and sports prosthetics to lower-limb amputees across the United States.
After a year of suffering through phantom pain, Drew rediscovered life with the use of prosthetics. Today, he is an avid athlete and speaks to numerous schools and organizations helping other amputees. He's also interested in becoming a prosthetist himself.
