Frank Wess and Doug Lawrence started working together in a variety of settings beginning in the 1980's. Among the bands they recorded and performed with include "Buck Clayton's Swing Band", "Dennis Mackrel's Manhattan Symphony Jazz Orchestra", "The Frank Wess Big Band", "The Count Basie Orchestra" and the great big band on this recording - "Grover Mitchell's New York All-Star Orchestra". Both Frank Wess and Doug Lawrence are well known throughout the world as featured tenor soloists from different era's of the Legendary Count Basie Orchestra. This classic "dueling tenor" chart - "A Move In The Right Direction" - was recorded in New York City by Grover Mitchell's band and gives the listener an idea of what these two great tenor saxophonists sounded like playing together. Something they did on countless gigs in New York (including dates at the Village Vangaurd and Carnegie Hall among others). This song appears on the album "Hip Shakin' " - Ken Records Japan. Produced by Ken Fujiwara 1990.
