NCLEX Alert! 🚨 When you see a patient with Anorexia Nervosa, what is your FIRST priority? While weight gain and body image are long-term goals, ELECTROLYTE BALANCE is the immediate life-saving priority.
Why it matters:
Hypokalemia: Low potassium leads to deadly cardiac arrhythmias.
Refeeding Syndrome: Sudden feeding causes a massive shift in phosphate, magnesium, and potassium, leading to heart failure.
Nursing Action: Monitor the EKG, check the BMP (Basic Metabolic Panel), and supervise meals to prevent purging.
Don't get tricked! Always choose physical stability (ABCs) over psychological needs on the exam.
