Swami Ram Ji Maharaj was the spiritual force who saved Kashmir Shaivism (Trika philosophy) from near extinction in the 19th century.
During centuries of upheaval, Shaiv scriptures were destroyed and practice survived only secretly in a few Kashmiri families.
Born in 1854, Swami Ram Ji was regarded as a Siddha and even believed by devotees to be an incarnation of Anand Ishwar Bhairav.
In May 1884, he established the historic Shri Ram Trika Shaiv Ashram at Fateh Kadal, Srinagar—a turning point for revival of the tradition.
He strengthened the Guru–Shishya parampara, teaching disciples like Swami Mehtab Kak, Swami Vidyadhar, Swami Gobind Kaul Jalali and others.
His lineage later produced Swami Lakshman Joo, who took Kashmir Shaivism to the global stage in the 20th century.
Swami Vivekananda met Swami Ram Ji at this ashram; on his advice Vivekananda sought blessings at Kshir Bhavani, Tulmulla before going to Chicago in 1893.
Many saints, including Dandi Swami Narayananand Saraswati, felt their spiritual doubts dissolve merely by entering the ashram.
Swami Ram Ji recognized the divinity of young Lakshman Joo, initiated him into yogic practices and shaped the future master.
In 1915, he left his mortal body, merging with the Divine Universal Self.
Today, in 2026, the “Ram Ji Lineage” is inspiring a worldwide revival of Trika philosophy through gatherings, teachings and webinars.
From a small house in Fatehkadal to the entire world—his mission continues to keep Kashmir’s ancient wisdom alive.
