From Day 1, Tehran flooded Kurdish cities with text message warnings, deployed IRGC scanners to hunt satellite signals, and sent busloads of reinforcements to seal the border — while simultaneously threatening to obliterate Iraqi Kurdish forces if they so much as approached the frontier.
Trump initially called a Kurdish ground invasion "wonderful" on Day 6, only to reverse course entirely on Day 8 aboard Air Force One — telling reporters he had "ruled that out." The whiplash left Kurdish commanders bewildered. "It wasn't clear to me what the Americans were trying to do," militia commander Amir Karimi told Reuters. Iran, meanwhile, launched at least 388 missiles and drones at Kurdish positions in Iraq from the war's start through late March, killing fighters, destroying bases and striking a compound U.S. and local officials say housed CIA personnel.
With the two-week ceasefire now in place, commander Rebaz Sharifi sits in Erbil dodging drone strikes and waiting — the border sealed, fighters trapped, and the uprising that never came still smouldering somewhere on the other side of the mountain.
