The Soviet T-64 medium tank (main battle tank in practice) was an exceptionally innovative and complex design, though it was simultaneously temperamental. Issues with the engine, suspension, and autoloading system earned it a great deal of criticism (which would lead to parallel developments such as the T-72 and T-80). The T-64 would have been thrown in the trash altogether had the T-64A variant not greatly improved its overall reliability. Though the T-64A was accepted for service, it did suffer from some relatively minor issues which would be ironed out over time.
