During a Senate budget deliberation, Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla defended the proposed 54 million pesos confidential fund for the Office of the Ombudsman, stating that the agency is more aggressive in pursuing investigations and purchasing necessary information. Addressing questions regarding ongoing corruption probes, including flood control anomalies, Remulla reported that 35 cases are currently before the courts, with 31 pending at the Sandiganbayan and four in regional trial courts. Additionally, the anti-graft body is conducting 166 preliminary investigations and 107 lifestyle checks aimed at pursuing asset forfeiture cases against unlawful acquisitions. To augment technical capabilities and resolve cases faster, the Ombudsman recruited 60 young lawyers and plans to recruit 40 more by November. Remulla also outlined plans to purchase an existing building near the Senate for the agency's new headquarters rather than having the Department of Public Works and Highways construct one, citing cost efficiency and reduced corruption risks. Senator Panfilo Lacson proposed amending the Ombudsman Act to earmark 10 to 20 percent of restituted public funds to augment the agency's operational budget. The committee affirmed that confidential allocations will remain restricted to national security, investigative, and law enforcement agencies.
