Celebrating Jab Jab in Grenada is an experience like no other! Though the name has French origins and translates to “devil,” former slaves used the character to mock their masters.
Today, it’s an expression of liberation — freedom from the chains that once shackled the ancestors. Persons playing Jab often use oil, molasses or charcoal to dress themselves in black — many wearing goat horns on their heads accompanied by chains and red tongues.
But before you play Jab, you must make sure to prep your skin with something like baby oil. Ian Charles of Jambalasee Grenada likes to use a charcoal mix, which he says is both skin and environmentally friendly. And he breaks down part of the process here.
