Latin America's largest boat show opened in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday (April 12) with three warehouses to showcase boats as the luxury business continues to rise in Brazil.

The event, named Rio Boat Show, is in its 15th edition and organizers expected some 40,000 visitors from around the globe.

The fair is based at the Maua Pier, located at Rio's historic seaport area, with over 100 boats docked at the port as part of the show. The visitors now have the opportunity of joining exhibitors on test drives.

In December 2010, Brazil overtook UK's place as the world's sixth largest economy. The country's strong economy is the result of the country's main exports.

Due to the expanding economy, the luxury business is going through a good phase.

Rio Boat Show's technical manager, Marcio Dottori, said Brazil's economy is responsible for the increase in the luxury department.

"In a developing country is natural to see an increase in the boats sector. Everybody wants a boat. The leisure time, today, is not only leisure, it is almost a therapy. But we still have a deficiency in the boats per habitants rate. With Brazil's favourable economy and the global crisis, the foreign boat business is, now, investing in Brazil. So, we have many boats in here," he said.

Businessman Luis Antonio Lourenco considered buying a boat at the fair. He said the idea of making the boats accessible for everyone was very appealing.

"To make a boat accessible to everyone, with a good price and easy to store is very interesting," said Lourenco.The organizers expect 250 million reais (134 million U.S. dollars) to be spent at the event.
