The Socceroos opened the scoring with a Craig Goodwin volley just before half time but after missing countless chances to secure the game and make it 2-0 South Korea finally struck back after talisman Heung Min Son was brought down in box late by Lewis Miller in injury time for Huang Lee Chang to equalise from the penalty spot. Australia had already played their hand by making several defensive substitutions and with deflated hearts struggled to readjust in extra time to a less defensive structure, kept in the game by a prolific socceroos captain Matt Ryan. Unfortunately Ryan's saves were to no avail as Lewis Miller once again brought down a South Korean player on the edge of the box for Tottenham star and South Korean captain Son to make the score 2-1 to South Korea with a fantastic trademark freekick. Shortly after socceroos substitute Aiden O'Neill was sent off for a dangerous challenge and Australia were down to ten men with just 15 minutes of the second half of extra time left to rescue their AFC Asian Cup 2023 hopes.

Unfortunately the mountain proved too big to climb and South Korea progressed to the semi finals where they will meet Jordan after beating Australia 2-1. Final score South Korea 2-1 Australia
