NOTES: want to be clear with people about my situation. I am homeless myself. I’ve had to make hard sacrifices just to survive, including saving what little money I have for hotels during emergency winter days instead of relying on city shelters.

Based on my own experiences, I do not trust New York City outreach or shelter services. When it comes to homeless services, they do not take into account who you are, what you need, or whether you will actually be safe. People are placed into shelters where there is real danger, and the city is aware of this. That is not acceptable. It’s traumatizing, it harms people mentally, and it puts lives at risk.

I’ve been robbed twice in shelters. Because of that, I refuse to go back—no matter how many times outreach approaches me. When they ask, I tell them to leave me alone. I’m not being difficult; I’m protecting myself. My choice is about safety, dignity, and survival.
