On the 9th of May 2017, Andy from Trailkraft took on the classic ridge scramble of Beinn Alligin, including the iconic Horns of Alligin—often considered the most accessible of the Torridon trilogy. With perfect weather and huge, clear-skied views across the ancient Torridonian sandstone, this solo scramble offered more than just a physical challenge.

But this wasn’t just another hill day…

🌫️ The Mental Game – Doubt & Decision
Before setting off for the scramble after the second summit, Andy nearly bailed. Confidence was low, conditions felt daunting, and another experienced walker on the same route turned back. That hesitation—that gut feeling—is hill sense in action. Knowing when to pause, when to assess, and when to proceed is a vital part of maturing as a mountaineer.

Ultimately, Andy’s years of experience, knowledge of his own limits, and mountain respect saw him through. Once committed and focused, the path unfolded safely. This moment reflects something important for all mountain folk:

The Horns of Alligin are a straightforward Grade 1 scramble in good conditions but can feel exposed. On a clear day like this, they offer unmatched views and a satisfying solo challenge for the prepared and respectful adventurer.
