What happens when a blizzard hits a greenhouse?
In this video we take you behind the scenes during a major winter storm as we weather the challenge of keeping our greenhouses safe while more than 32 inches of heavy snow piles up outside.
With tens of thousands of pounds of snow pressing down on the greenhouse roof, we can actually see the main supports sinking nearly 4 inches under the weight. When you grow plants in the winter, storms like this become a serious concern. If a structure were to collapse, it would instantly destroy the plants and expose everything inside to the bitter winter air.
Greenhouse growing brings a lot of joy—watching plants grow, preparing for spring, and sharing beautiful flowers with customers. But storms like this remind us that there are also real challenges and risks behind the scenes.
Join us as we show what it’s like to manage a greenhouse during a blizzard, the stress a structure can experience under heavy snow loads, and what growers watch for when winter storms hit.
