This is a tune from Martin Carthy’s 1988 Topic release “Right of Passage” (CD version only). I saw Martin perform this many, many times live – he used to play McVeagh (from the same album) and then segue immediately into this. It’s a real finger twister, especially as he played it at a real lick, metronomic as ever. His playing is always astonishingly inventive and utterly captivating.
Tuning is Carthy's staple CGCGDA, with a lot of palm muting on the low C and G. Guitar is a fabulous 2021 Taran Tirga Mhor (spruce over Malaysian Blackwood), and audio courtesy of Apogee MiC and Garageband.
