In this video, I build and demo a Fender Princeton-inspired volume and tone circuit, complete with a DPDT bypass switch that completely removes the tone section for a cleaner, hotter signal. This handy little module becomes a powerful tool when experimenting with different tube stages and amp configurations — perfect for builders chasing new sounds or troubleshooting tube amp circuits.
What’s in this video:
Classic Fender Princeton tone circuit explained and demonstrated
How the 470pF and 47nF capacitors shape the treble and bass response
Adding a bypass switch to remove the tone control entirely
Experimenting with different circuit positions (gain stage, buffer, tone control)
Real-world sound tests using a universal 7-pin tube gain stage, cathode follower, and EL84 driver
Why simple control modules can drastically change your amp’s sound
This project is part of my ongoing tube radio-to-guitar amp conversion series, where I reimagine old electronics into custom guitar gear.
