The night before, he had looked at the clock many times so that he would not miss his court date. He knew that today was a fateful day; the day when a decision was to be made about Hanieh's future and custody. For this reason, he got out of bed before even the neighbors woke up, and after doing the basic housework, he carefully locked the doors of the house one by one.
He had already poured grain for the chickens so that they would not go hungry in his absence. He glanced around the yard; everything was in order. He knew that cars rarely passed in front of his house and that if he waited there, he might miss his court date. So he decided to go down to the main road in the village; where cars were more likely to pass. He took this route and reached the side of the road. He sat for a few minutes, staring into the distance, but no cars passed. A gentle wind was blowing and the silence of the road increased his anxiety. However, he did not despair; he told himself that maybe a car would be found in a few minutes.
On the other side, Amir also had to appear in the same court. He put on his formal clothes, opened the door to the courtyard, and got ready to leave. He had not yet started the car's engine when Abbas suddenly came towards him and said in a serious tone: "The main reason for this court is Haniyeh. If a decision is going to be made about her, why doesn't she come with you?" Amir replied: "Hanieh is at school now, how can I take her with me?" Abbas immediately said: "It's not a big problem. I will call the school principal right now and get permission."
Abbas called and explained the incident to the school principal. After hearing the matter, the school principal agreed to Haniyeh's departure. Abbas hung up the call with thanks and told Amir to go to school as soon as possible. Amir also left, gave Haniyeh a ride, and they headed to the courthouse. On the way, Haniyeh asked her father worriedly, “What’s the matter?” Amir sighed and said, “We have to go to court so the judge can decide whether you should have custody of me or Shakil.”This sentence created a heavy silence in the car. It wasn’t long before Haniyeh noticed Shakeel standing on the side of the main road, waiting for the car. Her heart started pounding when she saw him. She turned to her father and said, “Please stop.” Amir pulled the car over. Haniyeh immediately got out and ran towards Shakeel. She said breathlessly, “The reason we’re going to court is so I can choose who I’m going to stay with. But I’m saying right now that I don’t want to live with you. I’ll say the same thing in court. So it’s useless for us to go.” Shakeel, deeply affected by these words, replied with a mixture of sadness and anger, “I know Amir tricked you into making such a decision.” She even wanted to take Haniyeh home with her, but Amir got out of the car, took Haniyeh’s hand, and put her back in the car. Then he left without hesitation. Shakil, who did not want to leave the matter unfinished, followed them in a taxi to the court.
Meanwhile, it was lunch time at home. Abbas, who had been involved in the matter since morning, prepared a delicious meal to calm the family. The smell of food filled the house, but hearts were still worried about the outcome of the trial. Hours passed before Amir and Haniyeh finally returned home. Everyone was eager to know what the judge had decided and what would happen to Haniyeh.
