China has signaled resistance to calls for broader international military involvement in the Strait of Hormuz after President Donald Trump urged several nations to help secure the strategic waterway.
Trump said the United States hopes countries such as China, the United Kingdom, France, Japan and South Korea would contribute naval forces to help keep the passage open.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical energy chokepoints, carrying a major share of global oil shipments each day.
Chinese officials have instead emphasized respect for sovereignty and called for de-escalation and a political solution to the regional conflict.
