Teaching horse to target his butt to our hand can be useful in some situations such as lining up along a mounting block or adjusting his position for grooming or foot care.
As a safety feature, I would always teach a sound 'yield the butt away' signal before teaching targeting the butt to the hand. Ideally we want the horse to respond to either signal freely.
It's important to have very distinct signals for 'hip away' and 'hip towards me', so the horse can easily distinguish between them.
