The eventual solution is below...
SYMPTOMS - Extremely slow acceleration, especially from stop. Almost embarrassing at a stop sign or red light. On the freeway, it would get up to 60 or 65 but would occasionally drop to 55 and not go above.
WHAT ELSE I TRIED - I gave it a tune-up (changed spark plugs and wires).
Changed the oil.
Cleaned the Mass Intake Air Sensor.
Changed the air filter.
Changed the evap solenoid.
SOLUTION - I added transmission fluid. After the previous attempt, I drove the car around. It seemed worse, plus I started hearing a straining noise that I hadn't heard before. I looked up how to check the transmission fluid and discovered that it was almost empty. After adding a few quarts, the car immediately worked fine.
