A continent is one of Earth’s seven main divisions of land before the continents were formed they were all combined together as one massive supercontinent called Pangaea. Pangaea was surrounded by a single ocean called Panthalassa . Pangea began to break up. Scientists believe that Pangea broke apart for the same reason that the plates are moving today.

Plates, what even are they?
Let’s start with the layers of earth to understand it better. The Earth is composed of four different layers. Many geologists believe, as the Earth cooled the heavier, denser materials sank to the center and the lighter materials rose to the top. Because of this, the crust is made of the lightest materials (like rock- basalts and granites) and the core consists of heavy metals (nickel and iron). So, you can say that crust is the solid, rocky, outer shell of the planet
