Many folks look to amateur radio for preparedness functions. They practice and learn the skill. But folks on the trail in all conditions and seasons ans environments, are vulnerable to those elements. Reliable communication in those settings is another tool to help keep us safe and in touch.

It goes without saying that you can’t always use your standard hand held amateur radio and get a response. Sometimes it’s just too far. Arriving at that knowledge is a process of testing the radio along different routes that you’re familiar with.

I’m always testing to see where I have good signal. It’s often way more widespread than the service my cell phone offers.
