In this lecture, we quantize light and show how the harmonic oscillator is used in the quantization process. We work inside a finite box to do this. First the classical Hamiltonian is converted into a sum over harmonic oscillator terms, called the quadrature operators. Then we quantize. One immediately can solve this because it is the sum over a series of harmonic oscillators. We show how the average of the electric field vanishes in any state with a definite number of photons in it. But the fluctuations are nonzero. This holds even for the ground state. We then look at uncertainty in the quadrature operators.
