Ultrasonic extractors give high Silymarin extraction yields of superior quality within a short processing time.
This video illustrates the cold extraction of Silymarin from ground Milk Thistle seeds in a small batch. A Hielscher 200 watts ultrasonic homogenizer UP200Ht, with 26mm probe S26d26 was used in this demonstration.Hielscher makes larger extraction machines for larger batches and for inline extraction for full scale production.
Silymarin, a mixture of flavonolignans exhibiting many pharmacological activities, is obtained from the seeds of milk thistle plant (Silybum marianum L. Gaertner, Asteraceae). The isomeric mixture of polyphenolic flavonolignans in milk thistle seeds is known as silymarin and contains the polyphenols taxifolin, silychristin, silydianin, silybin A, silybin B, isosilybin A and isosilybin B.
