In game theory, a subgame is a smaller game that is part of a larger game. Subgame theory is the study of how to find equilibria in subgames, and how these equilibria relate to the larger game


What is a subgame?
A subgame is a self-contained subset of a game that starts at a specific node
It includes all possible moves and outcomes that follow from that node
It doesn't depend on the previous history of the game
How do you find a subgame equilibrium?
You can use backward induction to find the equilibrium in a subgame
A Nash equilibrium is subgame perfect if it's a Nash equilibrium in every subgame of the game
What are some examples of subgames?
In the ultimatum game, the whole game is the only subgame
In chess, there are many subgames that start at different positions on the board
In an international crisis, a subgame could be the decision of whether to make a demand
