This is a slideshow set to the song 'Cabin Essence' by Brian Wilson and Van Dyke Parks. The song was originally recorded for inclusion on The Beach Boys legendary 1966/67 unfinished masterpiece 'Smile'. It wasn't officially released until 1969 when it was included on the '20/20' album. The video depicts the journey of immigrants into the American farming heartland and their contribution to the development of their new home. In particular, the slideshow focuses on Chinese immigrants who were essential to early American railroad construction. They were badly exploited for cheap labor and then excluded from U.S. entry and full citizenship for many years. I hope you enjoy this interpretation of Van Dyke Parks marvelously evocative lyrics, which have been the subject of so much speculation and evaluation over the years. Many thanks to the talented fan-mixers whose efforts can be heard in this version. Of course the biggest "Thank you" goes to Brian Wilson, Van Dyke Parks, and The Beach Boys for this phenomenal record.
