Teddy Riley really wanted to honor his great idol, who was also Michael's, that is, James Brown. So they wrote a song inspired by the success of "Get Up That Thing" and "Blues and Pants".
So Teddy put together the instrumental and showed Michael that he remembered "Sex Machine" a lot, then Michael composed a melancholic lyrics of a sad love story.
